What do you believe underpins western societal values?
Whatever it is, if anything, is it the same as underpins your own personal values?

//what underpins the billions who are self serving//
Billions??? There are 7 billion people on this planet, what percentage would you have down as entirely self serving?
Question Author
Whatever it is, WHAT UNDERPINS THEIR MOTIVATIONS.
I can't answer for other Theland. I sense that it is self-gratification. This will leave them in despair. See my other posts, please.
Quiet simple Theland. The vast majority of humans co-operate with other humans because that is how we survive as a species. But as with any species there are those who get greedy. Some get caught (and dealt with by that species accordingly)...and some get away with it.
Just nature.

Indeed Jourdain, ive known a few wealthy people who are miserable and some destitute people who would give you their last piece of bread and yet are incredibly content.

Jourdain - I understand you.
We may live in a secular atheist society, but we enjoy what our forefathers built up and fought for.
And THEIR society, and in fact the whole of western civilisation and culture was predicated on a belief in the trancendental, something that is nowadays being picked apart and dismissed piece by little piece.
But as that belief in the trancendental shrinks, so the selfie culture increases its influence.
What USED to underpin our society is rapidly being diminished and what is replacing it is not nice.
Thank you Theland - not many people do understand. I am fortunate in where I live. :)
Question Author
Jourdain- where is that?
//What USED to underpin our society is rapidly being diminished//
OK Theland, so what DID used to underpin our society?
Question Author
Nailit - A belief in the trancendental.
Look around at all the churches and cathedrals we have. So much expense and effort put into these projects? Why?
Because society was made up of people who believed in the trancendental, something greater than themselves.
//Because society was made up of people who believed in the trancendental, something greater than themselves//
Indeed they did.

//Look around at all the churches and cathedrals we have//
You are aware that a lot of early churches and cathedrals were built on the sites of pre-existing pagan temples? Of people who believed in the trancendendal and something greater than themselves?
‘Because society was made up of people who believed in the trancendental, something greater than themselves‘

Utter crahp. They were told to believe otherwise they’d go to hell. Not exactly free will and definitely not a sign of a whole group of people believing in the transcendental.
Question Author
Whatever. I don't know what motivates you Nailit. Still trying to figure you out.
So pagan Christian or tree huggers the point I am making is a belief in something greater.
Anyway, not many tree hugging or pagan churches around where I live.
Question Author
Zacs - Utter rubbish.
Theland, then we’ll have to disagree.
Question Author
Zacs - Touchez!
Theland - As usual you ask a question, but you don't really want any answers that don't agree with what you already want as responses, hence your testy replies and agitated CAPITALS.

I bet you are a real barrel of laughs on a night out!!!
I suspect Theland doesn’t go on many nights out.
Question Author
Night out? You betcha!
I asked the question, answer if you like.
