Wash And Brush Up Sir?

Does anyone else remember the signs saying 'Wash & Brush Up', usually in Gentlemen's lavatories, sometimes in barbers' shops, where if you were down on your luck you could get spruced up for a shilling or so? Not a hair-cut, just a wipe down and as the sign says, a brushing.

Googling doesn't throw up the usual thousands of leads, but I'm sure I did see these signs 50 or 60 years ago.

Anyone else got a long memory?

Yes, I remember them. There was one in the large gents in Newcastle Central Station.

Very common at major railway stations in the 50's, but a shilling would have been far too expensive. 3d or 6d was more like it.
