What Should Be Done With Northern Ireland ? Any Ideas ?

I was watching a debate coming from the Northern Ireland Assembly where most speakers were saying NI should remain a part of the UK. and , that was the general opinion of the rest of the UK. ! It is certainly not mine nor that of most people I have spoken to. In fact the reverse was the case. As one person put it, it should be floated off into the Atlantic and sunk.

But they could be doing that already and avoiding the Calais problems, and the need to trespass and hide on lorries: but they don't. So it can't be that easy. And even if it were it just means increased vigilance in NI for foreign folk turning up without the relevant passports etc..

Changing the border to Dover is increased work for the UK, but since anyone or any company transporting someone illegally over here will surely have responsibility for the error and to return the person back to where they brought them, it should result in fewer illegals needing to be dealt with at the border.

The 'Troubles' in NI are still only just under the surface, the DUP agreement with the government has brought them nearer again!
NI is totally divided into the 2 factions that want to be part of The Republic of Ireland and those that want to be part of the UK. Few of us in mainland UK have any idea as to how deep and bitter the rift between the two sides is , that is proved by some comments on this post!

Vulcan I realise you are speaking in jest , but the DUP insist that there can never be any form of border control between the 2 Irelands !
The second that happens they will withdraw support and the government falls at the next vote, leaving the way clear for a Corbyn landslide!

ummm, I don't think West Germany much wanted to take East Germany back either, but felt they had to (and it did cost a fortune). So I just wonder if Dublin were offered Northern Ireland whether they'd actually dare to say No, even though they last thing they need is green and orange hardliners in their house.

Islay am am nearly 67 and have been reading newspapers and looking at the news everyday since I was 7 or 8 . Northern Ireland was headline news every day for years back in the 1970s, when I was in my 20s. I have not forgotten what it was like, even if others have!

NI has never belonged to the Republic of Ireland so can't really be 'handed back'
And I think the bit in the Atlantic where it might be towed out to has already been snaffled by the Ukippers for when Great Britain gets towed away from all those nasty Europeans

Eddie, have you really thought this through properly? Why will it be any easier for a migrant to travel from Calais to Ireland post-Brexit than it is now? Even accepting your (wild) assumption that the “Le Touquet” agreement will be revoked (which is a matter we have discussed before and it is no more likely now than then) it will make no difference. That agreement only exists between France and the UK. It is not applicable to travel between France and Ireland. So if the agreement is scrapped it will be no easier for migrants to travel from France to Ireland than it is now. You should also bear in mind that direct travel facilities between France and Ireland are quite limited and furthermore that Ireland is not a Schengen Area member. Any routes between the two countries are subject to the same border controls as between France and the UK. That could be why thousands of migrants heading for the UK currently don't transit Dun Laoghaire

It will be no more an “easy option” for migrants to travel from Calais to Ireland post Brexit (or even post-Le Touquet) than it is now and the idea that hordes of migrants will suddenly see access to the UK via Ireland as an easy win is simply bonkers

i have grew up in NI all of my life.

i make no apology in saying " i hate this country and cannot stand 90% of the people " i cringe when ive been away abroad to a lovely place such as thailand or france only to come back into say heathrow airport and hear the dreaded NI accent ......grrrrrrrrrr !!
i host on airbnb and am amazed the amount of aussies & yanks who come here and fall in love with the place.
the weather is atrociuos, thats the worst part. if the weather was decent even for 5 months per year it would probably make NI bearable.

the so called loyalists love the queen ( for what ) i think she should be .................. along with the rest of the royals , i really do like harry though .
the loyalists call themselves british but they also say they are " northern irish " erm ?????? idiots dont know what they are really.
the republicans & nationalists want NI to belong to the rest of the island of ireland and rightly so . the british stole their country and they believe it should be taken back , i cannot blame them !!
this is from me, someone who for years allways thought himself as a loyalist , an ex loyalist paramilitary ( terrorist ) .
im now 50 years old and have come to the conclusion that i have more in common with the irish man from south of ireland than the english man across the channel.
