AOG, nobody has any more of a vendetta against this party than against any of the other major parties. You may have noticed that whatever Labour does or has done, some will attack it and the same applies to the Tories. If this party wishes to present itself as an important party, it will receive, and does receive, the same treatment. Whether you agree with this...

There is very little about UKIP that can surprise me but this did. If Farage has any chance of making much headway in 2015, he should kick this tw*t out of the party with immediate effect.
In the initial stages of a party, particularly pretty much a one thread party, you will always attract the nutters that would not fit in with the mainstream.

Even the mainstream parties have their problems and they are more experienced at rooting out the rotten apples plus have a much wider range of candidates to pick from.

Of course, we are only going on hearsay so have to be careful, but if true it shuold be dealt with sharply by Farage.
ymg...UKIP was founded in 2003, hardly a new party.

The difficulty with UKIP is not that they attract nutters....all parties attract nutters. Its their lack of urgency in dealing with these idiots. Look how long it took Farage to lance the horrible Godfrey Bloom abscess.

I have to admit that UKIP is slowly becoming less weird as time goes on but it is not moving quickly enough. UKIP is still a byword for a Bunch Of Fruitcakes, Loonies And Closet Racists.
Does seem a particularly odious thing to say to children in care, if true.

If we are ever to broaden the base of MPs away from the current clique of largely white, largely privileged, only ever worked in politics type of candidates though, to get greater representation in the House of people with more relevant experience of life in modern day Britain, we will have to accept that some unguarded, offensive, crass or just plain clumsy comments might well become more commonplace. Seems to me that political parties right now are petrified of the notion of a loose cannon or an unguarded comment, meaning they chose the "one of us" safe option for candidate selection.

I do not, for instance, think that this councillor should be hounded out of office, but he should be challenged on his statement and forced to either attempt to justify it, or withdraw it with profuse apologies.
LG...I am with you in allowing this chap to justify or withdraw his comments, but I would question why he said it in the first place. Its self-evidently daft and offensive. Common sense should have told him that.
I'm afraid I have to disagree.

Tories 179 years, formed 1834
Liberals 154 years (The Liberal Party grew out of the Whig Party in 1859)
Labour 113 years, formed 1900
UKIP - 10 years.

UKIP is still very much in its infancy, so much so that it may well still just disappear.

Unlike you I dont bother about them one way or another, so perhaps I can be a bit more subjective.

I do object to your 'closet racist' jibe though. That smacks of New Labour attempting to put down anyone who dared raise the subject of immigration, something even the labour party admit in hindsight was an error.

ymb....It says on Wiki that the party was formed in 1993 :::

The title of a Bunch Of Fruitcakes, Loonies And Closet Racists isn't my quote, although I would have liked to coined it. It comes straight from the horses mouth itself :::

His wife has said that he was 'challenging them' like US President John F Kennedy with his famous 'Ask not what your country can do for you' speech.

Still seems an odd thing to say to three kids in care. I could understand if he was talking to a group of fit young adults who live in benefits, without trying to find work...

But kids?

It just seems completely insane.

I don't understand that mindset.
Well, one can attempt to justify anything someone says, if you describe it as an attempt to "challenge" something :)

That sounds more like a post hoc attempt at damage limitation to me..

Just another thread where the actual 'crime' is not under scrutiny, only the political party that the offending culprit happens to belong to.

I wonder why UKIP seems to upset some ABers so much?
Whatever your politics, AOG, surely that is an inappropriate question to put to a child?
AOG...I can't be sure about this but it could have something to do with the
Bunch Of Fruitcakes, Loonies And Closet Racists bit !

What is the actual 'crime' that you think should be under scrutiny here AOG?

I do think there's something in what others have said above. With these fringe parties, the people are basically amateurs. Strongly opinionated 'characters' who haven't been schooled in the art of spouting bland inoffensive soundbites by the party machine. As such they're more likely to actually utter this kind of crass nonsense, instead of just thinking it and keeping quiet.

That of course 'stands to reason' and I do not dispute that what he said was indeed wrong, but my comments was the fact that many on this thread are using this matter as a stick to beat UKIP not the perpetrator regardless of his politics.
OK thank you then AOG.
Like the idea of his fellow councillor. It doesn't matter what he says, so long as he is being honest. No comment on whether, if the man said it, honestly, that was the right thing to say, rather than being crass. Who says it is a crime? If we want a crime, how about forging eight signatures on a nomination form? But we are not talking about that.

Reading that could well describe any of the political parties, and many of their members, it could even be extended to a certain member of the Royal family who is often accused of uttering so called crass remarks.

Just like threads which attack the main parties. No-one feels the need to hold back criticising Labour, the Lib Dems or Tories on AB

Why should UKIP be treated with kid gloves?
