its not an insult or disrespectful. its a piece of cloth.
What happens about passports and passport control with burka clad people ? My passport photograph was rejected because my fringe was too long !
While they're at it I think that should ban slobby men walking the streets in horrible vests and baggy shorts, I find that more disrespectful.
In what way is it an insult and disresepctful?

Is it the same sort of disrespect some British tourists show when they holiday in Europe - or is it something unique to the UK?
Lol @ Mrs o
I would suggest banning leggings for 90% of the people who wear them first, these are much more offensive than burqas
I do like to see peoples faces when im talking to them :)
Sometimes I wish I had a burqa to throw on, especially on a bad hair day along with an outbreak of spots, you could wear your PJ's underneath, bonus.
I get an unfortable feeling when i cant see their faces.
Gives me the creeps.
none of you can see peoples faces when you talk to people on the internet (excepting webcam users) yet you do this, day in day out without seemingly any problems.
Your right fluffy, didnt think of that one. lol
That's because we're all in the same position, mcfluff. It is awkward trying to have a conversation with someone with a covered face- especially when it is a deliberate"keep out". Faces are a very human way of relating to each other.
Privacy from CCTV, speed cameras, TV police vids etc - get yours now ;)

rockyracoon, there is no reason whatsoever why you shouldn't wear a burka if you want to.

Conversing on the internet does lead to misunderstandings because there is no intonation or expression to the written word. That is why electronic communication is littered with ! lol :) :( rofl *joke* SHOUT pmsl and long winded explanations.

Try talking to anybody with their face covered if you are deaf and you'll be in real difficulty.
I guess it would only be a problem for deaf people if they relied on lip reading, otherwise their hearing aids would still be effective. Is make=ing the contact between deaf people and muslims really a good argument for banning an item of clothing?
I've personally never had any encounters with somebody wearing a burqa, we did see somebody at the airport a few years ago and my daughter asked why the lady was hiding which made me smile!
Deaf people do rely on lip reading and face reading to an extent even if they have hearing aids.

If you've never had an encounter with a woman in a burka, with eyes covered by a sort of lacy grill, you have no idea how disconcerting it can be.
But when I do have an encounter with somebody in a burqa and am predictably disconcerted by it, I wouldn't ask them to remove it to make me more comfortable in the same way they wouldn't ask me to face east and start praying
