A nearby town has a 'gai pride'(it is in France) march today. What's to be proud of? if the gais had acheived gaidom after a lifetime of effort then it would be understandable but they claim to be born that way. Perhaps I should start a 5' 10" pride march or a shoe size 9 pride march. But what to wear? there's the problem.

Manchester Gay Pride is huge, a full long weekend party but with some more serious sides such as vigils for those lost to HIV/AIDS and remembrance of those who have lost their lives as victims of homophobia.

It's a safe space with the gay village cordoned off (you can't get into the area without a special wristband) where people can be themselves without having to worry about being discriminated against, have comments made, even be attacked. thrown out of places etc... just because of their sexuality.

The parades here are great, a huge amount of time and effort goes into it and it helps to raise awareness of issues and organisations as well as put on a damn good show, many organisations get involved, police, fire service, NHS and many more.
Straight people don't face discrimination.
If you see yourself as being in a section of society that has been discriminated against for generations then perhaps you feel more inclined than others to assert yourself. Some do it by unpleasant means. Gay Pride marches strike me as being a very jolly and indeed inclusive way of doing it.

I suggest you do organise a "Size 9 Pride" march and wear Size 9 shoes. That would seem appropriate surely :-)

Eve, A gay ghetto is OK? get a life!
Ghetto???? I think you will find the definition of a ghetto and space space, and essentially an enclosed three day festival without the camping, is a bit different.

douglas - - - ///Nowt wrong with gay people as a whole but flouncing, screaming queens just rip my knitting.///

You mean like Louie Spence?
Question Author
OK, a temporary ghetto but there is a whiff of gender discrimination here.
Howso? It's open to both men and women, just not the homophobic. The street preachers do come out in force round town though - some even along the parade line.

gender discrimination??

Baldric,OK gender orientation discrimination then.
Eve, The Expression 'Gay village' is a bit of a giveaway, so nobody makes them live together so does that make the rest of Manchester a ' straight village'
The Gay Village is a place where the bars and restaurants, and other businesses cater predominantly, but not exclusively, for gay people......
Ah, I see, it's full of bars, clubs and eating places rather than residential, it's not that kind of "village" as in for people to live in.

Did you ever watch Queer As Folk (not sure if there's much point asking but you never know eh!), that was filmed in the Gay Village.
In fact it has become increasingly popular with Hen Dos! I've been on many a fantastic night out there. As Jack said, it's not exclusively for gay people.

Well it's encouraging to know that the gay community tolerate straights (as they call heterosexuals in their unperjorative way) :o)
