I don't understand why anyone would want to. Especially those in the entertainment world who become rich and famous, a lot of them decide start taking drugs such as cocaine or even heroin, why? I can maybe just about understand the homeless and destitute perhaps who have nothing to live for and are looking for a few hours of oblivion but someone at the opposite end of the social scale who are successful and have everything to live for , I just don't understand.

some get sucked into that lifestyle, and it doesn't matter how much money you have in your pocket, several relatives and various friends of theirs got into that hippy, blow your mind stuff way back when, ruined some, and killed some others.
Coffee and tea are drugs. People take them because they like the effect.

I have taken numerous drugs through my life. The have invariably resulted in excellent experiences. Very few have I had more than once or a few times. Ayahuasca which was administered to me by a shaman in the jungles Ecuador stands out above all others as a profoundly mind expanding experience.

I am amused by those here who come across as knowing yet have never even experienced drugs other than those accepted by mainstream. Particularly those who speak about musicians and are probably not musicians either.

I am a musician (though not professional) and I play with other musicians, (some of them professional). Many of us smoke a bit of weed and find it enhances our performance.

Like alcohol is for some, weed for some is great for overcoming self consciousness and letting the music flow.

It doesn't suit everyone but the picture of drugs as an inevitable route to demise is ridiculous propaganda.

Alcohol is a far bigger problem than all other drugs combined yet it is legal. The biggest problems with illegal drug is their illegality rather than the drugs themselves.
The first time could be peer pressure, depression, starting on a soft drug so the jump to a hard drug isnt that big of a deal, curiosity mixed with the notion that they are too smart to get hooked...
In my experience, the first time is curiosity. Subsequent times were because I liked it.

One drug I started using from peer pressure. That was alcohol.

Most of the progress to "hard" drugs is due to mixing with criminals to obtain a "soft" drug that anyone could otherwise grow in their own garden.
//Also often drugs are given away (at first) by pushers for free (to get you hooked) so it is difficult to say no. // -VHG

I don't think this is true. I think that's something dreamed up by the papers. I have been around small-time dealers and have never known anyone to give away drugs in order to get people hooked. They might give a tiny bit away or get something new in, in order to keep customers happy and loyal, but not to get anyone hooked.
