he states he is not trying to do this ... but i bet he would if he could!

but do you think they should try?

obviously there are loads of medical and scientific obstacles etc - but i assume he seems to think its possible.
so i am talking in general, society, ethics etc - what are the pros and cons etc?

could we reintroduce the neanderthal successfully?

on the surface i kind of like the idea ...

cheers

Terrible idea- this would be a sentient being- with, at present, a culture of only one. That woudl make it for all intents and purposes a freak, a one off. What manner of relationship could it have- it would have no family other than the woman who gave birth to it and who is to say how intelligent it might be? It would be fascinating, but utterly utterly cruel and I'm glad he's not thinking of it ( allegedly).
I think it's awful, what becomes of the poor thing if the experiment is successful. I'm sure it will be sold on the pretext of medical science but I personally think the whole thing stinks to high heaven.
Ive known a few Neanderthal women in my time!!
The first thing I would ask is 'why?'

Secondly, I think any such experiment would be a slippery slope.

Ratter, I've known a few blokes like that too. ;o)
It wouldn't be lonely, take it to any Town centre on a Friday or Saturday night, there would be loads of like minded 'people'.
Baldric...........;-)
Naomi, I think the slippery slope started with poor Dolly the sheep. I fear this example of the neanderthal will become reality within a decade or so :(

Perish the thought!!! :-o
Haaa! They weren't around for long. ;o)

Well, if they did, I suppose Millwall would sell a few more season tickets.
There is/was a regular poster on this site who I think would be ideal,
She's looking for a job,
Doesn't like going out, if she does this she wouldn't need to,
It sounds as if her husband would bond with a Neanderthal quite quickly.

Haven't you been to parts of Glasgow like Royston?
It would be a bad idea on all sorts of levels. Nox and roccy have nailed the objections nicely. Bad science too.

I think this is far more likely a case of media spin than a serious proposition...
Duncer, I've never had that pleasure ;)
You wouldn't want it to be a Brow Presentation would you?
i know some who definitely gave birth to Neanderthal babies, grew into Neanderthal blokes, however not sure they would have done it voluntarily
they mentioned this on 8 out of 10 cats last night, they pointed out that the human race destroyed the neanderthals, what has changed ?

we already have, Wayne Rooney....
jonathan woss, russell brand, two Neanderthals if ever there was.

well it is believed that we contain some neanderthal dna already, due to our anscestors cross breeding, so it could be argued that he/she would not be totally 'alone' in that respect as they wouldnt be 100% neanderthal anyway - they'd he half homo sapien.
they would have the woman, but also her family and friends as well... the ones who were accepting of this.

also they say a neanderthal could walk down the road and no-one would notice them, and certainly would not look out of place, even more so if they were half homo sapien.

i agree itd be very weird for them, and i wouldnt want them to be kept as some lab experiment, living in a lab its whole life etc, but i suppose the idea would be to have more neanderthal babies and eventually reintroduce the species to the planet in its own right.

there are good reasons not to try to bring back other animals as they are dangerous - but what danger is a neanderthal/homo sapien?

its a tough one i think, because there are so many reasons why itd be amazing ... but then there are still people on this planet that cannot handle a person of the same species with merely a different colour skin, so who knows how people would react to a person who actually is a different species.

maybe the problem is that not all homo sapiens are ready to accept someone like this ... i would like to think they would be celebrated by most people, rather than viewed as a 'freak' ...

i wonder if in the future, say, 300 years, when it is likely that racism is laughed about as a historical abomination - that a person like this would be welcomed and loved.
