Lottery Winners & Publicity

I see that the latest lottery multi-millionaires have had maximum publicity. Does anyone know if it is compulsary for winners to submit themselves to the media in this way after a big win?

Personally I think it is extremely unwise. When I lived in Australia, there was a tragic case in 1960 of a lottery winner named Bazil Thorne whose little boy, Graeme, was kidnapped for ransom after a big win. No ransom was paid and the child was brutally murdered. Stephen Bradley was taken from a ship heading for Europe, charged with murder, and imprisoned.

Surely lottery winners should have the right to remain anonymous?

I wouldn't like publcity if I won the lottery but with such a big win as this couple had it would be hard to hide away from it! I think they feel compelled to tell the world but as you say there could be adverse consequences. I would just like to collect my winnings and decide for myself what to do with it!
taken from the lotto Site Rules , would think the euro has the same rules ?

Whatever you win, The National Lottery will only reveal your identity as a winner if you give written consent or if we have to by law. Playing by Direct Debit is completely confidential - we will not pass any details of your Direct Debit on to any other organisation unless you authorise us to do so or we are required to do so by law.
So these latest winners must have chosen to go with the publicity. How silly.
I think the lottery organisers would make sure the winner would come out because of the favourable publicity. Just think what has happened in the past when a lottery winner has not come forward quick enough. They publish the town and even the shop where the ticket was bought. Then you get the local papers on the trail trawling through the area. The name would eventually come out by fair means or foul.
When I used to do the Pools I always put a cross in a little box as I didn't want any publicity !
Ah,but do you know this couple are the real winners ? They could be actors ! The real winners give them a few bob to do all the right things but keep themselves secret !
How the hell can you keep that win a secret be serious!!
There is no way on this earth , that you could keep your identity secret , after such a huge win .

I suspect that the lottery people have told them this and advised them to go public and get the publicity out of the way at an early stage
Page - i'm sure i've seen that name on my family tree
I didn`t tell anyone when I won, it`s embarrassing winning £900 with 5 numbers
I wonder if it would do more good in the world if we had had 56 winners of 1 million pound each . Think of all the businesses that could have been set up and the amount of employment that would have been made.
Someone asked them what they would do about the begging letters.

They answered that they would keep on writing them.
I'd be all over the media, gloating like a gloaty thing!

I'm a millionaire hahahahahahahahaha
