Hello folks! Once one is possession a decree absolute, can I automatically revert to my maiden name without going through any further process OR would I need to change it back by deed poll??? I ask because I have share certificates & other legal documents in my married name which I need to change. Obviously I will seek legal advice, but I was just wondering! Thank you.

I'm pretty sure you can just go back to your old name.  You have to write to people like the bank and tell them that henceforth you wish to be known by your maiden name and then they will organise things like specimen signatures.  As far as things like passports are concerned, again a letter plus all the paperwork - Absolute, birth certificate etc.  A friend has just gone through all this and she certainly didn't do anything by deed poll.   It's time consuming rather than difficult I think
All you need to show is the Paper Chain - Birth Certificate - Marriage Ditto - Whatever - to show that what you did at the time was in whatever name you had at the time.

You can change your name back no problem.Just ask a solicitor. To change by deed poll is expensive but I just got my solicitor to draw up a document saying that from now on I would be reverting back to my madien name. Then I just sent a copy to my bank, mortgage company etc.Totally pain free and easy. And believe me its very liberating to go back to being yourself!!

You need to swear a Statutory Declaration on Change of Name.  A solicitor can draw one  up for you (and charge you for doing so) but if so, I think you still have to swear the document at a different solicitor's office. So you end up paying the fee for drawing up the document, plus a fee for swearing the document - although usually most solicitors put the swear fee in a charity box these days. It costs around 5.00 to swear a document, and an additional fee for each exhibit that is attached to it.

If you want to do your own stat dec and just swear it y ou can get an idea of the format from http://www.swarb.co.uk/lawb/prcDecChangeName.shtml
