I watched the excellent Money Programme featuring Sir Alan Sugar the other night and was puzzled as to how a guy named as "Derek Shaw" was said to be Sir Alan's brother.

Does anyone know how two guys with a different surname can be brothers? I know that adoption is one answer, but that was never mentioned in the programme.

Maybe step or half brothers but they just call themselves brothers.
yeah - I have a son & daughter and 2 stepsons - but they all call each other brother(s) and sister - and genuinely think of themselves as brothers & sister. Which is really nice.
did a quick search and didn't find the answer, but discovered that his company Amstrad was so called because it is Alan Michael Sugar (AMS)TRADing.

I never knew that!

and it's not terribly interesting, but hey ho!
I found it interesting sara - I never knew that either!

Thank Jillius and sallabananas for the logical answers.

sara3 and sallabananas - the origins of Amstrad are well documented, but not always known by all. And yes, it is good to learn stuff - you're never to old to learn! :o)
hey surreyGuy - are you a teacher by any chance?! If so, I feel that sara and I have just been given 8/10 for effort!

SurreyGuy... apart from the fact that I'm evidently not at school.. what makes you think I'm in the "never too old" league?!!

sara3 - it's a turn-of-phrase and was not meant to offend! :o)
