doesn't salop mean b*tch in french?
Close but no cigar, it's b@stard. B1tch is salope
I thought it meant who*e, as in the underwear shop, la petite salope, the little who*e...
Salop (male) and salope (female) etc. are just generic terms, which are best translated by words like bastard, bitch, whore etc. (which, by the way, contain neither asterisks nor numbers) - not every word has a literal and/or direct translation! A translator/interpretor would choose the best term to try and keep the translation as close to the original as possible given the context and register of the original text. One would also have to bear in mind the current social meaning and frequence of words.

And finally... Shropshire.
So Shropshire is just full of bastards, bitches and whores! Sorry, couldn't resist :-).
