Anyone know why the name Margaret is sometimes shortened to Peggy...makes no sense to me.....???

Margaret was abbreviated to Maggie and that changed to Meggie. The Peggy version was just a rhyming version of that. William became Bill in much the same way and so did Richard become what it has become!

Makes more sense than Daisy, which is another variant.
