I have heard from an Israeli friend that all new houses built in Israel have to have, by law, a room in them that can withstand bombing or chemical attack. However this fellow is known to be liberal with the truth, so can anyone confirm/negate this claim please?

It is true ... all new houses in Israel include a bomb shelter in them. According to http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/world/180110
7 Many
buildings constructed since the 1950s contain basement bomb shelters. But after the 1991 war, the government declared that all new houses and apartment units must contain protected rooms with reinforced concrete walls and sealed, blast-resistant windows.
