Hiya
I have a book on Irish Genealogy, and it contains a table showing the surnames in Ireland having five entries and upwards in the Birth Indexes of 1890, together with the number registered in each province- Leinster; Munster; UIlster; and Connacht.
using the exact spelling you write, there are no instances, that means in 1890 there were no McCoughlin births registered, but it is a very good guide to the surnames of Ireland.

it really is only a snapshot but it is interesting that out of the many hundreds of names beginning with Mc that one does not appear.

of all the variants listed on the linked site above, the only ones included in the 1890 source, i.e the birth index, only Coughlan appears, 65 instances in Cork, Coghlan appears, 49 instances in Cork and Dublin.

I was always told that Mc is Irish and Mac is Scottish ~ although you find both in Scotland, the Mcs are the Irish settlers.

By the way my Mother in laws maiden name is McLaughlin ~ they are all Scottish, but Irish decendants.
Hi

My surname is McLoughlin (by marriage) and as far as I am aware that they originaly were Scottish who ran away to Ireland. I have a map of Ireland showing the places where the surname originated from and mine is from Donegal. After researching the name to the best of my ability, when the Irish had their own leaders or kings of their area much the same as Britain was split into groups such as Mercia Wessex and so on Donegal's king was a McLoughlin. Mc or Mac meaning son of.
