Daventry junction off M1

Hi All,

Whilst driving back from Birmingham yeaterday i noticed a massive cross above a big ditch just next to the turn off for Daventry on the M1. Anyone know what thats all about?? Was it a burial place or something??

Might have something to do with the Battle of Naseby.....need to do a little research before I jump in with more!

I thought it might be Eleanors Cross ... One of the crosses erected by Edward the 1st, to mark the route of his wife Eleanor�s body as it traveled toward Westminster Abbey.

I think that the nearest Eleanor Crosses are at Geddington and Northampton, both well to the east of Daventry.

I`m not having much luck at the moment with any other connection, but will try to look at the OS map for the area tomorrow. Hope that might help!

Just to clarify jsk, which junction are we talking about? 16 or 17?

Beginning to have a nasty feeling that I could be well out on my original suggestion, but that doesn`t mean that I won`t try another tack!

Ummm, u know what snowy, i couldn't tell u which junction... all i remember was a single sign marked up for daventry and just behind it was the field and the ditch with the BIG cross. i'm so mad with myself for not really making more of an effort to pinpoint it. really appreciate all your help guys!

I`m afraid that I seem to be going round in circles with this one. I`m no historian, just fascinated by questions such as this. You may just have to hope that someone who lives nearer to the area than I do sees your question before it drops off the first page. I do have to go to a good reference library later in the week, but as it is a good 200 miles away from the area of Daventry, I may not have much luck.

I live about 5 miles from the area you are on about and I can't think of anything!!If you were coming from B'ham, the Daventry turn will be J18. You have got the old wireless station on the right and industrial estates both sides of J18. The only thing I can think of is about 1 mile before J18 on the left there is usually an advert hoarding on a trailer in the field. This often advertises the Jesus Army which has an office in Weedon. Could it be that?
