Tupac Shakur was born in Brooklyn New York in 1971 to parents who were both members of the radical black political movvement The Black Panthers. As rapper '2Pac', he became known for his visionary political lyrics, which made him a massive-selling recording star, a film actor, and a role model and poster pin-up for disaffected American youth. After a career dogged by controversey, Tupac was shot dead in New York in 1996, the victim of an as yet unsolved, but possibly drug / politics related gang murder. Since his death, his album sales have increased steadily, and his influence on rap music and black culture continue to grow.
