Can anybody tell me what the Home Counties are, and why they are called this?

They are the counties nearest London...Surrey, Kent and Essex with the following sometimes included...Hertfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Sussex. It seems that Middlesex used to be included.
It is probably based on the idea that courts in these counties were called the Home Circuit...ie they were serviced by judges based in London.
