I think it's because people want to look cool, fair enough I have been known to say both the S word and the F word. But where I come from and my profession means I hear it every other second, but I would never say it in front of someone I respected or my elders. Especially not my parents!

The iroginal shock value of swearing has diminished considerably over the last five to ten years. People use obscenities as conjunctions, and simply regard them as everyday speech. I'm not offended by it, but i think it sounds harsh and ugly, and infers stupidity on the part of the speaker. If a child hears such words as regular vocaubulary, they will use them, even though paretns often say "Where does he get it from?" because they genuinely don;t realise that they use these words.

I would never swear in any company except like-minded adults. I never swear in front of my grown-up daughters - the first time one of them used the 'F' word in front of me was pure exasperation, and I was so surprised, but also sympathetic, that I laughed! There were only she and I in earshot, and I think she was a bit embarassed, but it's not occured since.

i swear a lot, but in my proffesional life i have to deal with the general public, so i know it cant be used , but when i am with the lads, its every other word...............

but, the other day the police surrounded my business premises (looking for drug dealers) not me by the way, anyway when i found out i said "for f*ck sake" out a bit to loud.................. my 4 year old son then asked me who ***** sake was!! i was mortified that i lost myself for 1 second, and he picked it up like that....... me and the wife swept the word out of his head, but i was very very ashamed!!!!

also going back to that kid on the bus, i would of said something to his mother!!! it angers me that manners are not pushed onto kids no more!!

mine are very well mannered and thankfully clean mouthed!!!!

I wouldn't dare swear in front of my parents,i notice that my hubby will swear without realising he's done it,i do swear but not for the sake of it,and never in front of family or friends!!

think I'm like most of the postees here, I swear but never infront of people I dont know or my elders. And I have been known to remind people that i've got a 16 month old who adores new words if im out and about and people swear around me.

I still consider it bad manners to swear in public amongst strangers- does that make me old fashioned?

Boo it is sad that we feel we have to justify good manners and responsibility to set an example as being old fashioned. i swear at home and at work, but I can control it and my children didn't hear swear words at home when they were growing up, and peachy will back me in that, but never feel you are being old fashioned, murder death kill stuff has always happened and they don't call a new murder old fashioned, only the stuff of manners and respectability and so i feel it is unfair for us to feel we are of a different era.

Just to say I agree with the other posters, I can swear like a trouper when I get going, but I don't swear at work, in front of my parents or young children, even if their parents do!

I was shocked to see an advert tonight for Austrailia that ended with the phrase 'So where the bloody hell are you?' or something like that, I know thats not as bad as the 'F' or 'S' word, but I'd never have got away with saying that in front of my parents. Maybe overprotective but I'd rather that than, having every other word a swear word!

I was in a 'family' pub recently - it was very busy. A mother was sending her toddler son down to the far end of the pub to shout 'you f***ing c***' at some other people.

This happened several times. When I told the mother she shouldn't be encouraging him to do that she told me to'f*** off' and her son said 'Yeah f*** o**'.

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. I am frankly horrified.
So would i have been Ethel,i would never in a million years have my kids say that to ANYONE!!
I'd never swear in front of my mother. Not if it was her turn.

But trying to be serious, I'm of the opinion that we reap what we sow. Few people are willing to take responsibility for declining standards in society. It's always somebody else's fault. Parents blame teachers, for example, but are reluctant to discipline their kids. By the way, why is that? Kids spend approx 15% of their lives during school age actually in school, yet teachers invariably get the blame for how they turn out.

Of course, language (including bad language) is always evolving. There are words used now that have different connotations to what they meant 100/200 etc years ago. If a little kid came up to me in a pub and told me to f*** off, I'd find a way to get my own back, believe me!

Im 23 and I still dont swear in front of my mother. I do swear admittidly but I hate it when I see kids with no manners and swearing I think its disgusting and has a big part in the teenagers we see today. What happened to family values, rules, chores and manners?
Including, but not limited to, p1ssing in their lemonade.
I think all those of you who say you don't swear in front of parents, nans, elders or young children are hypocrites and guilty of double standards. If you can control your language in certain circumstances, why the need to swear at all? You all contribute to the lowering of standards. Okay, if you hit your thumb with a hammer, the odd expletive might pass your lips. When I watch programmes like Wife Swap or Big Brother and some people use the F word for every other word, I just think how lazy they are or how ignorant that their vocabulary is so limited that they can't express themselves in any other way. If we want things to change, it's up to each and every one of us to maintain standards.

I think peoples language these days is a ****** disgrace. In my day no ****** would get away with calling someone a **** or a ****. These ****** days its ****** normal to enhance each ****** sentance with a ****** swear word or 9!!

F*** me its P****** disgraceful!

I suppose Craig thinks he is hilarious - he's not. He can't spell either!

Oh no, i have been insulted on my spelling ability!! That hurts! I could swear, but i wont. :o)
