Well a lot of blind or partially sighted people wear sunglasses as some "normal" people can help staring at them as they appear slightly different to the norm and even if you don't have poor eyesight dark glasses can cut down on eye irritation. Of course there are those who just wear them for the cool factor.
Yes your right sft42, my mother was nearly blind and had to wear what appeared to be 'sunglasses' - but it was to protect her eyes as you said. She was very beautiful and was incredibly embarrassed about having to wearing these horrible things, as to her intelligence - well, she could add up purchases faster than assistants could key the numbers in .......... although FRUITbat I think you might be talking about the people who wear sunglasses on their heads indoors as an accessory etc...........
It can be for the cool factor as you said, although I remember being so shy when I first met my husband that I wouldn't take my sunglasses off until I'd drunk sufficient alcohol to get enough courage to remove them. I felt safe hiding behind them.
Moorfiedls diagnosed me with having a viral eye infection - to cut a long story short my eyes became extremely sensitive to light and spent two weeks in almost complete darkness at home and then another 4 weeks at work (and home) in sungalsses. I felt a right plum but had no choice. Better now but probably never going to be 100% again but consequently I try not to judge sunglass wearers just in case. I believe Gary Christian lead singer of the Christians wore his sahdes all the time for similar reasons.
Ive worn sun glasses whilst clubbing and could never decide whether this made me look cool or a tw*t.
This practice was originally found among jazz musicians. In their case the reason was not fashion but practicality. One of the side effects of some drugs, notably amphetamines ( 'speed'), is that the pupils of the eyes are dilated and so let in far more light than normal. This can be very uncomfortable , particularly if the user is under a spotlight in a dark room. Use of amphetamines was , maybe still, common among performers because they stimulate, keeping the user awake and bright through long late hours. (Cannabis use may also cause sore, reddened eyes but it's amphetamines that were the main cause). Fans, whether users or not , simply imitated their heroes and the practice became a matter of fashion and image.
Hmm, I suppose trying to look cool sometimes is it, but I used to wear sunglasses in the office because I have very photo-sensitive eyes and I get blinding migraines if it is too bright. I have solved this one recently by taking out the bulb of the light above me!
