I cried when Elvis Presley died (on my 30th birthday).

I did the same when Princess Diana died too.

I was 16 when Pete Duel died and it was devastating, I didn't eat properly for weeks and lost weight I couldn't stand to lose. I went down to 6 and a half stone that summer, i had to sit my GCEs too and it really affected me. I cried when Rick Nelson died in a plane crash. I was really emotional watching Diana's funeral. It shocked me when jack Wild died last week and I cried watching Bestie's funeral. I often get choked during the oscars when they show the annual footage of who they have lost over the year.
i would sob my heart out if anything ever happend to dolly parton i love her to bits!

i am gutted about marc bolan and douglas adams

sad about jack wild, dermot morgan, ronnie barker

then there the others that are a real shame but its so long ago now...john bonham, freddie mercury, keith moon, john lennon, jimi hendrix, janis joplin, brian jones, micky finn, richard beckinsale...god, theres loads!

Just the once - I was about 15 minutes from home listening to Radio 1 when there was a comment that an announcement was coming up that had shaken everybody in the building. When they said that John Peel had died the night before in Peru, I had a really hard job staying focused on my driving and just about made it into a layby before dissolving into floods of tears. I think it was a mixture of grief for the man and that a part of me had gone forever.

The death of Princess Diana and the funeral made me cry. Such a lovely person with so much to give.

I've never cried over a celebrity dying. I've been very sad, yes, even shocked sometimes, but I'd only cry over someone close to me. There's always something a little unreal about celebrities to me which makes it difficult for me to think of them as people who live and die like everyone else. I think part of me must expect that when they come off screen, someone will let the air out of them and pack them away in a box.
I cried when Shep from Blue Peter died.
And when the tortoise died during hibernation i was in mourning for 3 weeks.
Is Goldie still alive? - please dont tell me she is dead or i will be devastated.
I know the cats Jack and Jill are still alive and well because Leslie Judd is looking after them.

Like Dot,I was completely devastated when Pete Duel died.I was also very upset when I heard of John Wayne's death. Although we never actually meet our "idols"...we feel a real affinity to them.
I was in shock when I heard John Lennon had been shot, and I was in a daze all day at work. When I got home and saw the early evening news, it sank in that my hero really was dead, and I cried.

Dusty Springfield

Roald Dahl (I was only about 10 then too, found out via Going Live)

Can Pope John Paul be classed as a celebrity??? I cried when I watched his funeral on T.V when the crowd started singing. But I'm not sure if it was sadness or because I was moved by the way the people obviously loved him so much.x

i was pretty sad about graham chapman.

weirdly i remeber getting very teary eyed when victor meldrew was killed off!! - it was so sad!

I cried for most of the day when John Lennon died. I'm not sure if it was because I understood that from then on all the misconceptions about him being the most talented, creative and revolutionary (lifelong Tory voter, dedicated Mail reader? Righto!) Beatle would be set in stone or if it was because I was four months old. I guess I'll never really know.

McCartney rules.

I cried for days after hearing that John Peel had died. He seemed such a lovely, down to earth person and I think most of his fans felt that they really knew him.
cried like mad when bobby moore died . a great loss to english football
I may have shed a tear when Freddie Mercury passed on. But I'll never admit it...
What difference does it make if they are famous?
Princess Diana,Les Dawson,Ronnie Barker ,Jeff Astle,Red Rum,and Best Mate have all ruffled my stiff upper lip over the years.
rosieo I think that's an excellent point. I often feel emotional at the displayed emotions of others rather than at the actual source of their grief. Haven't ventured into mass hysteria yet but can see how it happens!
