I believe it's the abbreviated form of Margaret, don't ask me how they make that one out, there may be other names as well I'm not sure.
Margaret :)

Margaret = Peggy..... how?
It is definitely Margaret (I know a Margaret who is called Peggy) but Heaven only knows why!
Margaret became Peggy in much the same way as William became Bill and Richard became a four-letter word starting with 'D' and ending in 'k'. (I've stated it thus because I suspect I won't be allowed to offer the actual word I'm referring to. I believe that, because I - quite innocently - wanted the other day to use the word for what referees do with coins before the start of play and cooks do with pancakes...and was told to avoid obscenities!) Margaret was shortened to Maggie/Meggie and the latter of these was playfully altered to Peggy. Ricardus (Latin) became Richard (French) became the short-form Rick became the playful version as described above.
Oh, I had the same trouble with the pancake-flipping word as well the other day, and I did want to refer to flipping a coin . . . sorry, that was completely off-topic.
Dick Dastardly will be most annoyed...
...or not!
