I am trying to trace my great grandmother, she dissappeared (went back to London we think) in 1984 and it is possible that she is still alive. Every site we try for finding ancestors you either have to pay extortionate amounts or it just gives you a list of other people who are searching for the same name. Any idea where i can view birth/marriage or death certificates online for free or a small fee?

You can't view english birtgh marriage or death certificates online anywhere, free or otherwise.

You CAN search the indexes to the birth marriages and deaths though. Most sites charge for this but at the moment it is free on www.ancestry.co.uk

It is just a surname searchable index though so if she remarried you wont find her death unless you know her new name.

Genes Reunited is cheap!
i know a woman who dissapeared her name was elsie does this sound like her, she had a cat and a club foot

ancestry.co.uk allows you to find the index number for BMD's for free but you have to pay for certificates if you find the right one (7.00)

ancestry.co.uk allows you to find the index numbers of BMD's for free but you have to pay for the certificate which is 7.00.
Have you tried the Free BMD site?
You can enter names, approx dates and general areas.
It's not a complete site - but you can also try Family Search Org.

If you are looking for someone who is possibly still alive -
it's unlikely you will get too much info online.
Data protection doesn't allow for it - and ancestor sites won't be much help to you.

If you have an approximate date of birth and area where she was born - try the local registrar for that area.
They at least may be able to locate her birth certificate for you.
You don't have to buy it - but you'd know you were on the right track.
If you are trying to trace a living person - the Salvation Army used to do a great job. You could give them a call.
