Who said they do? If one uses property values to be a guage of wealth, then London has most wealth north of the Thames!!!!!
For every example of rich south there are several examples of rich north, west and east. Sorry Dom i think you are wrong on this one.
I always believed it to be the west as opposed to the east - as in London's West End versus East End - where one would find the rich living. I also understood that to be because of prevailing winds in the northern hemisphere being largely westerlies...ie smoke from chimneys/factories etc would blow towards the east and away from the homes of the wealthy.
The south side of Chicago is notorious for not being the wealthy part of town...
And in Belfast, the East is the place to be!

Luckystrike, south belfast is definetly the wealthier part of the city!!!
There are whole books written on this and in the post industrial western city the best model is probably the 'doughnut' (its got a proper name - named after some economist but cant remember his name).
The central business district of very wealthy with associated services situated there to service the wealth. Around this central district will be a band of (former)industry and the associated low grade housing that houses the (former) workers for this (former) industry and service workers who travel into the central business district. As you get further out you will get more affluent suburbs with pockets of industry and low grade houses near to main transport arteries. Depending on the age of the city (a pre industrial or industrial city) wealth levels will fall back off as you get into more rural areas.
I'm pretty sure in Louisville, Kentucky the South side of the city is the worst place to live, and in Swansea I would say the West side is the best place to live.

Erm...looking at a map of London, Brixton, Stockwell, Streatham, Camberwell etc could be described using many adjectives, not including wealthy.

That said, south Manchester has some very nice parts as I belive does Birmingham.

In the UK it is usually the West side of cities that has the best property. This is because prevailing winds blew the smoke (from our industrial past) to the East.
