Why are the Phillipines spelt with a 'Ph' yet their natives are Fillipino's spelt with an 'F'

It's peculiar, isn't it? The Spanish for Philip, the King after whom the islands are named is of course Felipe, and this spelling is used for the inhabitants. (Apparently, the term Filipino/a was originally used only for those inhabitants who were partly Spanish, but then spread to everybody.) Perhaps the official name of the nation, spelt in the English way with a Ph dates to the period during which it belonged to the US, before it attained independence in 1946.
