I've just about finished solving all the clues, but don't understand one of my answers.
10 A. Miles locating low bar before end of awful day (6) r?b?l?
I came up with 'ribald' - but don't know if it's correct, or why.
NB. Every clue is really two clues, separated by an extra word. I have solved the first half, so have omitted that info - the extra word seems likely to be 'miles', 'locating' or 'bar'. Thanks to anyone who can help.

The definition of ribald is 'low'. RIB is a bar, the end of awful is L, and D is for day. But not sure where the A comes from
The A is for ante (before)
Thanks doorbell
can anyone give me a hint on the second 3 down, I have T-V-
Question Author
Thanks for confirming and explaining 'ribald'.
Re 3D - you've got the same letters as I had. My answer's just a griddle, I can't think of an extra clue. Sorry!
Question Author
I've completed the grid, now working on the theme. I'm picking out the initial letters of the extra words. My version starts 'y,b,e' - as this looks so odd, can anyone who's done this tell me if I've gone wrong? Thanks.
the B is wrong
Question Author
Thanks, boreas - I'll get back to my list.
Hi I have finished all the clues and have the extra letter but still can't work out the 4,4 phrase - any help gratefully received
Think it might be BACK DOWN but I'm still none the wiser, yet!
I hate word searches, but it finally dawned!
i have found four of the words, which all belong to a category - but am stuck on the fifth
I wish I could crack the word search, I've gone word blind now!
The four I have found are languages
Question Author
Puzzled, can I just ask if 'back down' turned out to be right? I've been trying to get a phrase that'll fit nicely into the title - ie ???? ???? forward.
(I had a good phrase earlier, but it isn't defined by the extra letters!)
I have BACK DOWN, but don't get it yet
Question Author
My earlier thought - and only because it's an actual phrase! -was
Best Foot Forward. (I know this doesn't seem to work with what's spelled out in the extra letters.)
Not languages, scripts.
I see, as in 'scripts writers'?
I have the ones beginning with letters A,G,H and L but can's see the fifth
The fifth one is written down, top to bottom.
