Visiting times and grapes

How come in this country (might also be others-I dunno) whenever someone goes to visit someone in hospital they always bring them grapes?

Why grapes? I thought maybe it's because you don't need to peel them and they're easy to eat but so is a lot of different berries.

You could always try what Stan Laurel took for Oliver Hardy, in County Hospital..Some hard boiled eggs and some walnuts. Personally, I'd prefer the grapes crushed and fermented and turned into a nice crisp cold rose wine.  Don't think that's what the doctor ordered though

Grapes were regarded as a luxury early last century and they are easy to eat and digest.
