churches normally have things going on..if you dont fancy that how about a night class or go to your local library and see if their are any activitys for adults..where i am their are walking groups..wine making circles..debating groups..you could volunteer to help a charity..or if you are sporty join a tennis group or cricket..or volunteer to help with homeless people..their are shelters everywhere that would be glad of your help..if you say what you enjoy doing i may think of some thing else..
I cannot think of anything to add, bartholomew - oxeyedaisy seems to have said it all. Meanwhile I wish you the best of luck and may life be good both to and for you.
Hi there, London can seem like a daunting unfriendly place, but as there are millions of people living in the city, there are bound to be potential friends in abundance.

Try http://www.gumtree.com/ and click on "Friends/Partners"! then "Friends".

It's a site for people not originally from london who find themselves working there.

There are a few dubious postings, but hopefully you may be able to meet a circle of friends.

Good luck.
Also this site seems to be set up specifically for people looking to make friends in london.
