HELP ASAP a parcelforce question

I was meant to be getting a parcel which was posted late on thursday, it has a tracking number and since thursday the tracking has been saying"Item *** was posted at ***** on 12/07/12 and is being progressed through our network for delivery."

It is saying this on both parcel force's and Royal mail website.
Like other parcels does the status change to "At sorting office" "Out for delivery" or does it stay at this same status until it reaches you?

Are there any postmen or postwomen here, or anyone knowledgeable about the post office? How long do the post office or sorting office keep a parcel for you if you're not at home to collect it?
