You want to buy something that costs £97, but haven't got any money. You manage to borrow £50 from two people, making £100, pay the £97 leaving you £3. You give the two people £1 each back and keep £1 for yourself, so you now owe them both £49. £49 x 2 = £98, plus the £1 you kept for yourself = £99 - so what happened to the other £1?????

an oldie but a good 1
It's all in the trick wording...

The cost of the rod is £97,therefore you have actually borrowed £48.50 from the £50 you had from each person to buy it......,a total of £97.

So. you still owe each person £1.50 of the three quid change to fully pay the debt and nowt left for you...sorry :-)
