If Tony loses at sedgefield!!

What are the chances that Tony Blair will lose at Sedgefield. If the impossible happens and he loses will he resign and let Brown take over or do the unthinkabale and try to hang on as leader and PM for another term. My gut feeling is that he will fall on his sword. what do others think?

 if tony blair did not get elected as the MP for sedgefield then he could not stay on as leader as he would not be an MP, he is only the leader of the party because he is an elected MP, so you question is a bit silly, also if tony blair resigns gordon brown does not automatically take over, there is an election within the membership of the pary, and any Labour MP would be able to stand as the leader, so all this baloney on the TV about brown taking over is rubbish there is a process to follow that's how it happened with blair and that's how it will happen again, as for the first issue, he could not stay on for another term if he were not re-elected in his constituency,

I don�t think it�s a silly question janetp, its always good to look in to all possibilities I think I read that one prime minister ruled from the house of lords not sure if this is correct, can any ABs verify this?

janetp look at the answer by Grunty and ask yourself why he gave that answer. However not knowing why he gave that answer does not mean you are dumb or that you are silly, you just did not know of all the possibilities that are open to a PM who loses his seat. Few of us knew of these possibilities. the question was, bearing in mind that the PM can still be PM if he loses in his constituency, do you think that Tony would do the decent thing. I think so, perhaps you do too, some in AB dont. So there...

Brown is Old Labour with an appropriate agenda. He's lurking in the bushes ready to take over at a moment's notice. He's masquerading as New Labour, but he isn't. He will be an appalling PM, and it must not happen. The only way to keep him at bay is to not vote for Blair - fortunately that's not too difficult.

My original answer was intended to be a frivolous suggestion that Mr Blair would cling to power, but ex-prime ministers are often elevated to the House of Lords.  It is by no means necessary for a prime minister to have a seat in the House of Commons.  By my hurried calculation, 22 out of 51 prime ministers have been peers.
