Carpets on walls

Why is it that in many lifts, all around Europe, lifts/elevators have carpets lining the walls?

Many of them don't even have carpets on the floor

Because they are also used to carry goods and the carpet provides protection from scratches. In shinny lifts look for little metal pegs around the top, they are used to hang padded protective cloth for when its used to carry goods.

Anti-graffitti? Try scribbling with a felt tip on a bit of polypropylene corded tuft!
I always wondered why they do the same on coaches.
