Try www.craftcreations.co.uk they have a lot of free projects
which will give you some ideas about materials etc
WH Smith are doing some really nice little Christmas starter kits at the moment for 4.99 (or thereabouts). You get five cards with a load of embellishments, so you can do your own thing without splashing out too much
If you're after little kits Lakeland are also good. (especially in the Jan sales!!)

You need to think about it. The sort of stuff the I purchased when I first set out is not the stuff I would use now.

How about finding out if there are any craft workshops near you. Usually at your local craft shop. They would cost around 10.00 for 2 hrs but are a good way of finding out if you like something or not.
I have made cards in the past and gathered stuff from all over, but since discovering Hobbycraft you can't go wrong. They sell virtually everything craft orientated, i think you'll get something there if you live near one.
