Can anyone please help? My daughter has a school project to sew her name in Egyptian hieroglyphics. We know the symbols to use, but I am trying to find cross stitch charts to follow. Does anyone know any websites I can print them from? I only need the outlines of the individual symbols.

Hm obviously a toughie. I couldn't find anything free online. You could do it yourself by buying some fine graph paper (usually has 1mm lines horizontally and vertically), you should be able to buy a pad in WHSmiths. Then draw the symbols freehand in pencil on the paper, in whatever size you want them. Then use the graph squares to work out which squares you'd need to stitch to make it look like the symbol you drew. Alternatively if you found the symbols online you could print them out onto the graph paper.

Does that makes sense? Its not perfect but it might do as a last resort, and it is probably a crude version of how people design cross stitch patterns.

Does it absolutely have to be in cross-stitch? could you simply embroider?

Mark the design on cloth with chalk and sew with a straight running stitch along the lines, doing a back stitch to come up before the end of the last stitch so the line is nice and solid.
