hello I'm looking for reasonably priced sim free or virgin pay as you go phones, I would like to try them out before I buy I usually try virgin itself but they are expensive and offer few perks, I havent ever been in a carphone warehouse but get the impression the sales people just jump on you...any views?

carphone warehouse staff are pressure sales people and are trained to sell you particular products that give their branch the best TPC points or get the store manager his annual bonus
I go to Tescos.....
No consideration is given to what you are actually asking for or whether the product meets your requirements
I'd go with Tesco as well.

i dont have a tescos with a phone shop near me but if push comes to shove I could go out of my way to go to one....i might have to go back to virgin and have a look
any nokia will take any networks sim won't it? So just buy a nokia and put a virgin sim card in it,
I also use Tesco (and their PAYG) but Asda has a range of phones that you can have on their Asda Mobile tariff - both are excellent for PAYG (recent Which? report).
No Dot. It depends where you buy your phone. My was locked to Orange.

Got one from Tesco on special offer....plus you get triple credit.
Yes, Tesco is very generous with it's top-up - pay £10 and get £20 extra free.

well this phone is a work phone and business mobile number with virgin so I can't swap to another provider.... not yet anyway
I don't buy my phone from Tesco.....I just go for a look and a muck about with them, find the one I want, and buy it sim free online from Carphone Warehouse....it always comes the next day.
Question Author
oh I looked online at car phone warehouse and I couldnt see 'sim free' only that you had to choose which provider you wanted
if its a work phone why are they not buying the phone for you? and does the company policy not have upgrades built into the contract?
Question Author
im self employed the bill will go through partly as a company cost though
I swapped my business number onto a new Tesco PAYG sim-card with no bother, at all. Tescos (loathe as I am to admit it) give a very good service and with tripling of credit, it really is very cost effective.
I am on Virgin as well and purchased a Samsung Tocco from the CarphoneWarehouse website a couple of weeks ago. It cost £59.99 and came with a spare PAYG SIM card with £10 airtime credited.I just swapped the free SIM card for my works one. I am very pleased with the phone, it is a nice touchscreen one and is fairly easy to operate.
