When you are using a salt or pepper mill are you supposed to just keep turning it constantly the same way or back and forth?

I turn it the same way but shake it every few turns so the whole pepper corns get caught in the grinder.

I just use normal salt......

Apparently you should turn in a clockwise direction, and not back and forth. So I learnt something today, because this is not what I thought!!!! (thanks to google)

The only reason I turn it one way is because of the amount of cooking programs I watch.

and I watch the waiters with their big ones (pepper mills that is) and I thought they were going back and forth. Will watch closer next time and remonstrate if they are doing it "wrongly".
