I'm after one of those little gadgets that you can roll over os maps to give you the mileage of a route, I had one but it was not very reliable, I believe you can get electronic versions, but what are they called? Ta

Thanks pickle, but no, thats not what I'm after. Say if you plan a walk using an os map, and you want to estimate the mileage? I know theres a gadget available but I can't for the life of me think what its called! Think i'll have to pay millets a visit!
In A Pickle's answer is fine if:
(a) you're near to a computer ; and
(b) you're online ; and
(c) the places you want to measure the distance between are town or villages in the AA database.

It doesn't help much if you're fell-walking and you need to know the distance, from the Ordnance Survey map in your rucksack, between two trig points ;-)

You need a digital map measure, like one of these:

http://www.claritas-online.co.uk/products/prod uct_pages/misc/44.html

http://www.timani-ltd.co.uk/index.php?main_pag e=product_info&products_id=93

(Note that the first two, above, require you to calculate the real distance. The last one appears to do the calculations for you).
