Kodak V1003 Camera

I recently bought a Kodak V1003 camera for my father as a christmas gift, and he's only just got around to using it. He has taken a few pictures, but now when we turn it on it often says memory card needs formatting. But if we select format it then says Memory card is unusable.
Does anyboy have experience of this camera, or any idea what could be the problem. Both camera and SD card were brand new bought from currys.digital. The SD card is PNY one.
