Pipe smoking

I have smoked a pipe, off and on, for many years.
Not a lot - about an ounce of tobacco a fortnight.

My question : what, generally, is the public's attitude
toward pipe smokers? Do I detect increasing
hostility/disapproval, or am I just being paranoid ?

My opinion regarding smokeing is probably not typical in today's climate, but I really like the sweet smell of a pipe. I don't mind the smoke either, but not in a very enclosed space if the smoke is heavy. With the anti-smoking brigade, I expect you are detecting increasing hostility though, Scylax.
Sorry, I meant of course smoking - not smokeing.
as you know smoking is banned in scotland, i have earlier smoked cigarettes, and now i dont smoke in germany, where the ban here is imminent(although cigarettes are much cheaper), because i have realised that the beer is so good here, i should spend my money on that instead !
I don't find anymore hostililty towards pipe smokers that I do towards smokers in general. It's just that it is very rare these days to actually find anyone under the age of about 80 that smokes a pipe!

Pipe smoking is definately something that you very rarely come across these days so the people who object, probably don't like any kind of smoking.

I personally can't stand cigar smoke, I really can't stand the smell. So to me, I would rather stand by someone who smoked 20 cigarettes or pipes a day than someone who smoked 1 cigar a day.
Pipe smoking is more popular today than ever!
But there are three differences nowadays:

1) They are smoked in private rather than in public.

2) They are made of glass, metal or ceramic rather than wood.

3) Substances other than tobacco are smoked in them. ;-)

Yes, you are all correct, I think. It seems we are an
endangered species, being PI (politically incorrect)
and social pariahs thereby.

Odd; in South Africa pipe-smoking is quite common.
In Bavaria too, we dodos and dinosaurs seem to
survive against the odds. Pity about the UK.

Now though, I'll repair to my little workshop, light
my pipe and hope the Tobacco Gestapo don't come
a'looking until I'm at least 80 years of age.

I hate the smell of cigarettes, but love the smell of pipe tobacco. Reminds me of my grandad Joe - God bless him.
