i have been bought an i-pod shuffle for xmas.... l put some music on it but have decided l`m not that happy with it and l`d like a nano instead... can l take this back and exchange it

it depends where its from but my likely guess is no. Because you have opened the packaging, you are likely to be refused as it is not faulty.
If the goods are 'not satisfactory', i.e. 'not fit for purpose', you can change them.
If you want to change them for reasons of personal choice, the retailer is under no obligation whatsoever.
