I want a kitchen table, not a dining table, a good, old fashioned, small, lightweight kitchen table. Something that our kids (16-22) can put cups down on, do homework on etc. Nothing fancy, just a good old honest to goodness table... how hard can it be? Impossible apparently... HELP, any ideas, I live in Colchester area :) Oh yeah, about 4' x 3' oblong, not round!

There must be some shops in Colchester that sell the type of table that you describe. Pine shops are possibly your best bet.
Have you got any second hand places near you, like a Council place where they rescue good stuff to sell on? We got a wonderful pine kitchen table for 10 from one of those places.
Auction houses would be a good bet for this sort of thing.
Glynn webb do a good range of tables and they are cheap too.
my pal went to an auction and bought an old fashioned solid table for 5 sandpapered the legs, gave it a coat of varnish and then bought odd floor tiles [on sale for next to nowt] and stuck them to the table top so that she could just wipe it clean, 10 years on its still going strong.
