All statins work in the same way. They inhibit an enzyme called HMG CoA Reductase. This is responsible for synthesising cholesterol in the liver. A lot of our cholestereol is actually synthesised rather than ingested. In general the side effects for this class of drugs are the same although one drug may affect some people in a different way to others so doctors may then try a different statin. They are a very effective medicine, reducing fatty deposits in the arteries and thus decreasing coronary events and mortality. I hope this answers your question. By the way, simvastatin can now be purchased over the counter from pharmacies provided certain criteria are met.
