Was watching a programme about Gibraltar and people smuggling cigarettes out of there as they are cheap to buy and it got me wondering how much do cigarettes cost to buy here in a shop?

I think they average about £11 for 20 ( total lunacy smoking ) at that price
if i was still a heavy smoker (packed up over thirty years ago) it would be costing me about one hundred and forty quid a week!
Same here ael
Rolling your own is cheaper by far. I buy a packet of 50g tobacco for £20. This gives me over 100 cigarettes so they work out at £4 for 20.
Cheapest for 20 is £9.48 going up to over £13.
Me too as I smoked 20 a day.
My wife and I both smoked 40 a day, it would cost £45 a day these days. Scary
When I was in the Royal Navy many years ago we used to get Blue Liner Cigs 33p for 300 a month or you could get 600 if you were at sea. Not the best but they were cheap and family used to like the freebies. Glad I gave up around 40 years ago now.
You're rolling them too thick Jackdaw a 50g pack lasts me a week at 20 a day.

Wow, I had no idea. How on earth do people afford that, unless they are very well off. I'm quite shocked actually.
Jackdaw, there was a duke of Plaza Toro or some such place who was forbidden by his doctor to have more than one cigarette a day, so he used to have his hand rolled so each one was 3ft long.
Mine are £11.40 a packet of 20. When I bought them in Spain, including last year, they were about 5 euros (so about £4.50) a packet so no wonder they smuggle them. When I buy them out of EU on long haul holidays they were about £2 a packet.....
my brother cut back on smoking, as they had a hefty mortage and the 300 quid a month he was spending went on repayment for said mortage. now he's started up again, he's hooked alright.
It always amazes me how much tobacco now costs. How many people actually price the amount alcohol cost then?
anne, most smokers smoke every day, most drinkers do not.
as to drinking, its now more or less limited to the odd drink at the weekends. I don't smoke thank goodness. I couldn't afford 11 quid or more for cigs, what a waste.
I’m not too sure about that Barry. Especially during lockdown I’d not be surprised if some/ many people may have alcohol daily .
from BBC news

Alcohol killed more people in 2020 in England and Wales than in any of the previous 20 years, official data shows.

There were 7,423 deaths from alcohol misuse last year - a rise of 20% from 2019, the Office for National Statistics says.

Deaths increased from March 2020 onwards when the UK's coronavirus epidemic forced the first national lockdown.

Most deaths were related to long-term drinking problems and dependency.
those people were on a hiding to nothing, ive known alcoholics and their life expectancy isn't that long, especially if they smoke too.
