If you wanted to buy your wife a really special watch for her 40th birthday, what make would you go for? It will be a nice but not ostentatious watch for everyday use. I'm thinking Omega. Any other ideas?

Give us a budget bracket!  You can get ostentatious watches that are very cheap, or very expensive, yet subtle ones!  I have a very subtle Tissot.  It's not my everyday watch, but if I were richer it easily could be!  Good luck finding a nice present for your wife! :-)

I'm thinking 1-2K.
How about a Cartier Tank Francais, (in stainless steel)  they cost about 1500, (designated jewellers, not H Samuel etc) they are classy without being bling....
I'd go for a Breitling.
I have a Gucci watch - they always look elegant.

Gucci Watches definitely....my dad bought his wife a Gucci Watch from the official website for 500 and it is beautiful. And it also attracts alot of wow's from people when they find out she has/or your have bought your wife a gucci watch.....thats just me being arrogant...but what the hell!!

Why not take her shopping and let her choose it herself - not ideal as it won't be a surprise, but at least you'll know she'll like it.

Pretend you need a new watch and aske her to help you choose and while she's wandering around the store she's bound to pick up a few and show you ones she likes.

My father bought my mum an Omega that she still wears today - over 30 years on and she still loves it - it's a classic.

u might call me silly... but years ago my grandmother told me never buy or receive a watch from a partner as it marks the time u have left together.

I never took much notice of this as i was only 8 or 9. but as i got older and into relationships a watch was always on the xmas bday list... but guess what this happened with 5 relationships... and yes funnily enough they never lasted!! so when i got with my now hubby.. we made a promise never to buy each other watches and 10 years later were still together!!

Earings and rings can be so clique. My husband got me a watch from http://www.stylishladieswatches.co.uk/ last month and I've treated myself to a few since then!
