I'm invited - or rather coerced into - a Titanic centenery dinner. The dress code is either authentic to 1912, or formal black tie. As (although I'm female) I don't do dresses, I want to wear formal black trousers - you know, the sort that men can easily get, with a bit of a textured stripe down the side - but can I find them, can I heck! Any pointers gratedully received.

Don't forget your lifejacket.
I don't do dresses either so.... Think outside the box - why not try and hire a man's formal suit for the evening? If it's also to be authentic 1912 you might also consider white tie instead of black.
Any Masonic tailor will provide what you are looking for, although they are not used to dealing with women.
Coast do lovely evening trousers. You could also try House of Fraser, John Lewis and Monsoon. All are online so you could have a look before you buy.
Go in nightdress/pyjamas and a lifejacket!
btw just checked Debenhams website and they do dinner suit trousers.
