Can anyone suggest what to look for when buying a pressure washer for domestic use. I've heard that the average one you can buy from DIY shops are not very good. Are they worth buying?

I would like to be able to jet wash the car, patio etc but nothing major.

Thanks

The really cheap examples on the market will probably do the odd little job on your patio or the wheels of your car, but if you are considering using it on a regular basis, then it might be best to go for an established brand. Karcher or Kew are established brands, that have been around for years & are still on the market.
If you want the machine to really clean most jobs, buy one with at least a 5 horse power (hp) engine and 2400 to 2700 psi (pounds per square inch) pressure.  I have had one for several years here on the ranch and use it for most all cleaning jobs.  In addition, look for one with a "soap" tube.  This is an additional vinyl tube, the end of which is placed in a bottle of special cleaning soap or solution that is applied to items to be cleaned before pressure spray is applied.  Finally, make sure the spray wand is easily adjustable for fine to sharp spray patterns... Good luck!
It's worth the dosh for the feeling of power.

I paid 30 for one from Lidl two years ago and it works perfectly doing a good job on stairs, patio etc. My next door neighbour paid 26 just to renew the lance on his Karcher.
