He used to wear a green one, but it wore out.  When he bought a new one it was red because that matched the colour of the pictures on the cards.  WVNBIVDB
The Santa we all know and love, dressed in a red suit, was created for Coca-Cola in 1931 by Haddon Sundblom, before tha adverts he was dressed in green.
'Cos it hides blood easily.
Cause it's cold in winter?

The story that Coca-Cola created the version of Santa wearing a red suit is an urban myth. Santa was already pictured in a red suit several years before Sundlom drew his first Santa illustration for Coca-Cola.

There's no such thing as Father Christmas. Now get back to work! Humbug!
because thats the only colour santa suits woolies sell.

well it all started when coca cola came along and decided that santa looks like he dose now, red suit, rather fat and huge white beard and little feet, whereas he actuarly looked like this, green suit, not very fat, not a very big white beard and normall sized feet.

                        thank-you

Santa, father christmas, old sait nicholas, nonya.... were all free to wear what ever colours they wished before Coca Cola developed their ad Campaigns.
