We had a lovely time in Suffolk last week for our 2 night stay. We went to Ickworth House (NT) but wasn't up to much walking the grounds - wrong time of year as Spring bulbs not out yet. Visited the lovely villages of Long Melford and Lavenham (beautiful timber fronted buildings) The highlight of our stay was going to Flatford Mill (John Constable country!) What a beautiful place - so picturesque, the sun was shining, it was almost deserted (dread to think of the tourists in Summer) and took some beautiful photos and had a nice walk by the river. The following day we went to Bury St Edmunds for shopping and a look around. A nice County to visit - will return! :)

Dedham Vale ("Constable Country") is indeed a very attractive area. Although it can get quite busy in the summer, it's never really 'crowded' (in the Blackpool sort of way!). It's right on the border with Essex which (despite its 'TOWIE' reputation) has some incredibly attractive parts. (It's "Lovejoy Country" just over the border!)
Come back in the summer and visit Southwold on the coast. It's one of England's loveliest seaside towns!

When I was teaching in Sheffield a colleague told me that has going to take his family for a caravan holiday, starting in Suffolk and then possibly going elsewhere in East Anglia. They were deliberately not going to book ahead but just go where they fancied and take a chance on getting a pitch somewhere.
Knowing I was from Suffolk, he asked if I'd got any recommendations, so I suggested taking a look at Southwold.
He'd never heard of Southwold but decided to take a chance on my recommendation and drove there on the first day of their holiday, just to spend a few hours there. Within an hour of arriving they changed their travel plans completely and booked onto a local caravan site for the entire fortnight!

Actually, public transport around that part of Suffolk has always been a bit different. I remember, many years ago, taking a train with my parents to Halesworth in order to catch a connecting bus to Southwold. Upon our arrival in Halesworth though we found a sign telling us that the main bus company for the area had discontinued the service :(
However we then spotted a very small piece of paper saying that a local independent operator had taken over the route. So, after a nice lunch in Halesworth, we waited for the bus.
Upon its arrival my father asked the driver if they sold return tickets. The driver said "Yes", so my father asked for three return tickets to Southwold and handed over the fare. Then there was an impasse as he looked at the driver and the driver looked back at him. The driver said "Is there a problem?" and my father explained that he was simply waiting for his tickets.
The driver looked amazed. "We don't bother with tickets on our buses!", he explained. My father was confused: "But I've paid for returns. What happens when we want to come back?".
The driver was unperturbed. "Look", he said, "if you're going out now,you're obviously coming back on the last one this afternoon. Fred will be driving that one, so just tell him that you've paid Dave".
Sure enough, we caught the last bus home (with no tickets) and simply said "We paid Dave", which was accepted without query!
