pressure reducing valve

can naybody explain how a pressure reducing valve works. I'm talking about the kind that keeps the outgoing pressure constant no matter what the incoming pressure is.

They generally work against a spring which has a design strength suitable for the particular application. The spring will be overcome when the safe prssure is exceded.
