For trees of a given species, does their ratio of breadth to height vary depending on whether they are in a forest or open field?

One would think so. In a forest they are likely to reach up for the light but in an open field they don't need to reach and may stay short and squat to compensate for the increase in wind.

Perhaps you may get a better response in the Home & Garden category.
